This centuries old race consists of three gigantic octagonal shaped wooden structures called Candles which is carried through the city by brightly dressed participants and witnessed by an onslaught of bystanders. The winner is based the skill of the bearer handling the Candle. | ![]() |
Participants chase a ball of eight pound Double Gloucester cheese reaching speeds of up to 70 mph down a steep hill. The winner of this unique more than 200 year old race is the one to first to catch the cheese or reach the bottom of the hill. |

The Dragon Boat Race has a long history dating back more than 2,000 years with Qu Yuan who was a well-liked statesman and poet to the Emperor. It is believed he drowned himself in the river and the modern day boat race is a re-enactment of the fishermen who desperately rowed to him in their attempts to save him. Today dragon boat racing brings together teams from all over the world who paddle colorful 50 foot boats feverishly toward the finish line. | ![]() |
This festival dates back to 1688 in honor of patron saint Ranieri Sacceri who died in 1161. Along the streets of the river Arno 70,000 candles cast a beautiful dreamy glow on the buildings that surround its banks. A historical four boat regatta on the Arno River and firework show at the Cittadella Vecchia are also highlights of this event. |

Dating back to around 1650, the Palio horse race consists of horses and riders dressed in bright colors and arms who ride within the Piazza del Campo. Before the race is a beautiful historic parade of flag wavers dressed in medieval costumes, and displays by Italy’s national-level gendarmerie of sword wielding and a mounted charge.

Bastille Day celebrates the start of the First Republic that first began with cries of “Viva la France!” and the storming of the Bastille. The largest of the festivities is held on the Champs Elysées that include a grand military parade, arts festivals, a fly-by done by the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (Red Arrows) and parties.
